Installation & Backup

Q: What are .zip and .sit files? How do I open them?
.zip and .sit files are archive files. To extract them you can use:
a. WinZip (for Windows).
b. StuffIt Expander (for Macintosh).

Q: How do I install the program on my Palm?
Depending on the file type you've downloaded follow these steps:

- For .zip or .sit files:
1. Extract the files from the archive (See What are .zip and .sit files? How do I open them? )
2. Open the Palm Desktop program group, and select the "Palm Install Tool".
The Palm Install Tool dialog box appears.
3. In the User Name drop-down menu, choose the User Name that corresponds to your Palm Device.
4. Click the Browse button to locate the .prc file you've extracted.
5. Click on the Install button, and click Exit on the dialog that appears.
6. Set your Palm in the cradle and perform a HotSync™.

- For .exe files, run the .exe file and then perform a HotSync.

- For .prc files, follow steps 2-6 from above.

Q: How do I upgrade to a newer version of the program? Will I lose any data during upgrade?
Install the new version to your Palm Device, as described in How do I install the program on my Palm.
The new version will safely replace the one you currently have without any loss of data.
Note: Do not delete the previous version before installing an upgraded version. Doing so may cause loss of data!

Q: How do I delete the program from my Palm?
1. Open the Palm launcher by tapping the Home/Launcher button (the top-left on screen button).
2. Press the menu button (the bottom-left button on the screen).
3. Select 'Delete…' from the 'App' menu.
4. From the list of application select DateMate.
5. Select the 'Delete…' button.

Note: This will delete the program and its data from your Palm, and next time you perform a HotSync, from your desktop as well.

Q: Is DateMate's data backed up?
DateMate's backup files are located in your Palm backup folder with the names: DateMate_Data.PDB & DateMate_Pref.PDB (version 2.0 and up)
or
BRTdata.pdb & BRTpref.pdb (for version 1.6.1 and below)
The files are backed-up automatically during the HotSync.

Registration

Q: I bought DateMate 3.x (or an older version). How can I upgrade to the latest DateMate version?
The latest version of DateMate is not a free upgrade. Registered DateMate users may upgrade to the new version at a reduced price. To apply for this upgrade, or for any other questions, please send an e-mail to upgrade@mobimate.com .

Click HERE to view our upgrade policy.

If you want to go back to DateMate 3.2, uninstall the current version, and then reinstall version 3.2 - your old DateMate code will work with it. You can download version 3.2 from HERE .

Q: What do I gain from registering?
By registering DateMate you are helping MobiMate to expand DateMate and other new products.
Besides helping us, in the registered version:
- There is no limit on the number of event you can enter in DateMate
- You will never see the 'Please Register Window' again.

Q: What is the "Palm User Name" (HotSync Name) that I need to provide for the registration? How do I retrieve it?

Each Palm has a user name that is assigned the first time you sync the Palm with a desktop computer. This name can also be changed from the Palm Desktop software.

The registration code is based on this name and unless you provide it accurately, the registration code won't match.

To retrieve the Palm User Name, please do as follows:
1. Launch the Palm Desktop application
2. From the 'Tool' menu select 'Users...'
3. Select your user name
4. Click 'Rename...'
5. This is your Palm User Name.

Alternatively, you can get the Palm User Name from with any product from MobiMate:
1. Launch the program on your Palm.
2. Press the menu button (the bottom-right button on the screen).
3. Select 'Registration' (or 'Registration Code') from the 'Options' menu.
4. Your Palm User Name appears inside the dotted rectangle.

Q: I got the registration code. How do I use it?
1. Launch the program on your Palm.
2. Press the menu button (the bottom-left button on the screen).
3. Select 'Registration' (or 'Registration Code') from the 'Options' menu.
4. Enter the registration code.
5. You are a registered user!

Q: The registration code I got doesn't match. What should I do?
The registration code is based on the Palm User Name you have sent us. To make sure we have got the correct name please do as follows:
1. Launch the program.
2. Press the menu button (the bottom-left button on the screen).
3. Select 'Registration' (or 'Registration Code') from the 'Options' menu.
4. Click on the name in the dotted rectangle (Your Palm Name).
6. A window with numbers will open.
7. Copy the exact string of numbers, and send it to DateMate@MobiMate.com .

Working with DateMate

Q: Can I store events in my Address book and "import" them into DateMate?
Yes! Besides adding events directly in DateMate you can use the Address Book custom fields to store events, even for more than one person (e.g. the birthdays of a whole family in one Address book record). You can read more about this in DateMate's manual under ' Entering events into the built-in Address Book '.

Q: Can I use DateMate to track special events (e.g. holidays, sport events) or even add them to my Date Book?
Yes! DateMate allows you to import events that can be found here. Once you found an event list you want to add to DateMate do as follows:
1. Download the event list, and save it in a known place on your computer as a text file (.txt suffix).
2. On your desktop Palm software (Palm Desktop, MS-OutLook, Lotus-Notes, etc.) create a new memo.
3. Copy the text from the file you've downloaded into the new memo.
4. Perform a HotSync.
5. Launch DateMate on your Palm.
6. Select 'Import Events' from the 'Options' menu.
7. Select "From: Memo Pad".
8. Select the memo containing the list of events from the 'Memo' option-list.
9. Un-check the option "repeating years" (the date of some events change from year to year).
10. Choose whether to add alarms for the imported events using the "Alarm" checkbox.
11. Press "Import".

Troubleshooting

Q: DateMate doesn't import events I've saved in my Address book?
DateMate allows storing event dates in custom fields of the Address book. You can read more about this in DateMate's manual under ' Entering events into the built-in Address Book '.
DateMate "uses" the date format that is set in your Palm preferences (e.g. D/M/Y, M/D/Y). Please confirm that the date format that you are using in the AddressBook fits this format. For example, if you enter a date as 2/13/99 and you palm is set to D/M/Y, it will not recognize the date as valid.

Q: I set the alarm in DateMate. Why can't I see the alarm in DateBook?
DateMate has its has its own special alarm system which will go off on the set time (an audio alarm and a pop-up message). DateMate does not use the DateBook's alarm (that's why you do not see them in the DateBook entry) and does not create an extra entry in the DateBook as pre-notification.

Q: Why won't my DateBk3 icons be accepted (in DateMate's preferences)?
This might be caused by a problem in your DATEBK3 memo (the icons memo description). You probably made changes to this memo (either manually or by a 3rd part program) and DateMate can't parse it.
If possible, install the original DATEBK3 Memo and the problem will be solved.

Q: Whenever I exit DateMate, there is some sort of screen flickering? Is this normal?
This is normal. DateMate uses grayscale graphics. When you exit DateMate, your Palm "returns" to a non-grayscale mode and this causes the flickering.
If you want to disable grayscale graphics, you may do so in the program's preferences.
